MEDIA RELEASE 23 June 2025
The Australian Peace and Security Forum deplores the illegal strike by the US on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
This will not lead to peace in the region but is likely to encourage Iran to develop nuclear weapon capability and may well open the door to a nuclear arms race in the region, according to the Forum.
The US Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, recently testified that there was no evidence that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon only to be forced to recant by President Trump because the facts did not suit his plans.
It is no surprise that the Australian Government has endorsed the illegal attack because we dutifully followed the US into the pointless Iraq war on the falsehood of there being weapons of mass destruction. No such weapons were found.
We face a frightening future if facts are ignored and might is seen as the only solution to conflict.
The United States Government is showing flagrant disregard for the international system and Australia’s government is endorsing these actions. Both, however, like to criticise other countries who do the same in other parts of the world. The message we’re sending is that ‘might is right’, and we only support the international system when it furthers our own interests; a lesson the Iranians may decide to take to heart.
The Australian Government’s stated concern about continued escalation of violence in the region, rings hollow when it supports this illegal action. Instead, the Government should support the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ call for “Member States to de-escalate and to uphold their obligations under the UN Charter and other rules of international law…There is no military solution. The only path forward is diplomacy. The only hope is peace.”
The attacks on Iran have served Israel’s interest in diverting international attention from the continuing genocide in Gaza and US complicity.
