Andrew Wilkie MP to launch new Australian Peace and Security Forum

Andrew Wilkie MP, the independent member for Clark, Tasmania, will launch the Australian Peace and Security Forum (APSF) at a free online Webinar on Tuesday 24 September at 6pm AEST.

The Webinar will promote the need for a new approach to enhance Australia’s peace and security in an increasingly uncertain era.

“Confronted by growing economic inequality heightened risk of nuclear confrontation, regional conflicts, climate disruption, loss of biodiversity, invasive artificial intelligence (AI), pandemics, and cyber-attacks, Australians are feeling increasingly insecure about the future”, said Emeritus Professor Ian Lowe AO, Co-President of the new and politically non-aligned Forum. “We want to promote a national conversation on the best ways to ensure Australia’s peace and security, and call on the Government to develop a National Peace and Security Strategy for our nation in consultation with the community.”

The webinar will be facilitated by APSF Co-President and PhD candidate Matilda Byrne. Speakers are Major General Mike Smith AO (Retd); former Chief Scientist Professor Penny D Sackett of ANU; Professor Anne Poelina of the University of Notre Dame; and Raina Macintyre, Professor of Global Biosecurity UNSW.

This will be the first of the APSF’s webinars on critical issues of peace and national security. To register for the webinar on 24 September and to stay informed of future webinars, go to the APSF website at https://austpeaceandsecurityforum.org.au.
